The mission of the City of Hope Graduate School of Biological Sciences is to teach students to be outstanding research scientists in chemical, molecular, and cellular biology. Graduates of this program, awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in biological sciences, and will be equipped to address fundamental questions in the life sciences and biomedicine for careers in academia, industry and government.

City of Hope’s commitment to education led to the creation of the Graduate School of Biological Sciences, with the first class of students entering in 1994. In 2001, the school was accredited by national and regional accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

City of Hope’s interdisciplinary research approach provides for ample interaction with peers and faculty and an emphasis on translational research: applying basic science breakthroughs to clinical problems. The program develops a professionally trained scientist, prepared for a career in academia, medicine or industry. Our students have gone on to illustrious careers at major universities, research institutions, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

You must fulfill certain prerequisites in undergraduate coursework. You also need to have taken the GRE and have three letters of recommendation. Once you have all these requirements, simply complete our online application, submit the required documentation, and we will contact you about your admission status.
City of Hope’s Graduate School for Biological Sciences is a fully-accredited graduate school which provides students a thorough academic curriculum as well as excellent research training. This combination develops students into professional researchers.  The school places heavy emphasis on practical application of research findings to clinical settings.  Our state-of-the-art facilities and the tranquil setting of our campus offer an ideal environment for students seeking their doctorate.
City of Hope’s Graduate School for Biological Sciences provides students with financial support in the form of a generous stipend so that they can devote themselves full time to research and coursework.  Affordable housing can also be found in Duarte and the neighboring cities of Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia and Glendora.
Despite City of Hope’s world-renowned status, the Graduate School is actually a fairly small and intimate institution, with a select few students (under 100) admitted per year. This enables students to receive the individualized attention and mentoring necessary to developing a professional skill set at graduation.
