Your spice cabinet might hold the key to cutting diabetes risk. According to University of Georgia researchers, many common spices contain compounds called polyphenols. These can block inflammation that may lead to diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Ground cloves and cinnamon were among the spices with the most polyphenols; oregano, marjoram and sage were the top herbs. The researchers say that the spices appear to provide benefits, but they do not yet have direct proof of their effects. However, they suggest adding a variety of herbs and spices to foods, because different polyphenols may have different benefits. And besides, everyone knows variety is the spice of life.
